How to Shape Your Nail with a Hot Spoon for Classical Guitar
Shaping your nail with a hot spoon for classical guitar, or how to correct the curvature of the nail by bending it with a spoon.

My nail on my i finger has a bend or dip it in and I've been using the hot spoon method to correct the shape and bend it into a nicer curve. The bend causes the string to catch and although I've been playing with the bend for years I recently tried this method out and the result was good. I have better tone with that nail and it doesn't catch on the string anymore. I use a lighter, a spoon, and a piece of metal for protection between my skin and the hot spoon.
It only takes a minute and lasts between 12-48 hours depending on your pickiness. Maybe it only lasts a few hours. But you don't have to do it every time you pick up the guitar.
Disclaimer! Don’t try or do this…but if you do, it’s at your own risk. Hot stuff can burn you causing harm or burn your house down causing lots of harm.

    I hesitate between the Saers A90 and the AH80 (Hauser copy). What do you recommand. I Play classical repertoire from renaissance to modern. Great playing it is beautiful ! Dorian from Paris.

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar 2 години тому

      I haven't tried the AH80 but I imagine it would be more traditional sounding. So tighter balance and tone but just with less of the open quality I've mentioned. It really depends on what you're using it for. If you want a workhorse get the A90 but if you want it more for practice, recording, or personal enjoyment maybe the AH80. But this is so subjective though.

    I'm increasingly warming to the idea of this "Le Support" after watching both of Bradford's reviews. One thing that looks appealing to me is that, unlike the "Guitarlift", this support still allows the guitar to contact the player's body. For me, it's important to feel the instrument vibrating against my chest. Although a bit on the pricy side (a long-term investment), I think there is a "Nocturnal Gloss" model in my future. 🤗

      No guitar support is perfect, but Le Support is working for me. Really though, it's the contact on both legs that wins me over.

      It depends on the guitar but on average it's usually not ideal for steel string guitar while sitting. While standing with a strap it's more possible.

    The only thing I would prefer is a smaller nut width, playability is really important.

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar 2 години тому

      That really depends on the player. With a smaller nut width I have found that for certain repertoire my left hand fingers can buzz on adjacent strings due to the lack of room. Or when playing descending slurs next to an open string. So it might be more comfortable for some chords etc but then there is a lack of space and clearance.

      He's probably the most popular Renaissance repertoire but, yes, more people could embrace him. I think the repertoire is quite difficult plus the tuning aspect doesn't allow people to play it at early levels.

    I learned this from Renato Bellucci. He uses a soldering iron. I use a spoon under the nail and heat the top of the nail with a soldering iron. Obviously, I'm very careful not to overheat the nail. Also, I pinch the sides with a reshaped clothespin to set the c-curve. The c-curve is very important for proper, overall shape, and strength. The best shape is like that of an AlaskaPik.

    Before watching your great video on fingernails, I had the devil's own time trying not to have them break frequently. I thought I had tried everything, but you commented that it's important to keep the nails from getting dry and brittle, that moisturizing them is essential. I took your suggestion to heart and since then, 2+ years ago, not one failure. Throughout the day I lightly dip the tips in Burt's Bees hand salve, a mix of wax and oil. They are long and incredibly strong, holding up during active use as a wood craftsman and tree worker. My wife thinks they're scary! My "m" nail has the downward hook that your "i" does, and I'll try this method to improve its shape. Thanks for all your great knowledge and instruction.

    This is excellent. Thank you. I have used women's artificial toe-nails (Kiss brand) for about 20 years now. I just cut my real nails short, cut and shape the artificial nails, then superglue them on. It has worked well for me. I kept messing up and breaking my natural nails doing general home maintenance, yard work, and repair work on things like cars, lawnmowers, bicycles. They normally last up to a week or so, but I occasionally damage one or it gets too short from filing and I have to replace it.

      I understand that but I tend to shy away from 'where to put your fingers' videos because students need to work on reading the music and translating it to the guitar. I know it can feel tedious but that is how students get better at it. Using my method books from the beginning, even for just 5-10 mins a day can really help build confidence with reading and playing.

    @thisisclassicalguitar Thank you for the review. And thank you for all your high quality videos on your channel. 🙏🏼 Looking for a high quality amplifier at the moment. The main thing that I’m doubting about this one is the power of the amp and the size of the speakers. Quality of the amplified sound is the main spec for me. I’m looking for an amp that can reproduce a full, defined and both clear and warm tone in venues of about 100 people. This one seems a little too small for this. What is your opinion (and experience) about this ? As a comparison: I’ve also seen amps like the H&K ERA1 and 2, or something very different like a line array (like for instance the EV Evolve 30M). Would love to hear your opinion on these amps ? Or maybe you could do a video about these ? Another question: Almost all amp reviews I’ve seen on UA-cam are performed in a small room. Is it possible that you can also do reviews in bigger venues, or maybe even outdoors ? That would be a great addition ! Thank you in advance for your reply and keep on the great work !

      They also make a 60 watt version. Roland AC60 which I've used with orchestra which has quite a bit extra.

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar

      Maybe the finish on your guitar is more porous than some which creates air pockets that allow it to come off. I don't use the cling for the guitarlift though.

    When you are sight reading are you thinking the note name while you are thinking of melody/accompaniment and finding? When I do that I feel like saying the note name slows me down idk if that’s a good thing or not.

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar 7 днів тому

      It's similar to learning to read a phonetic language. At first we spell out each letter and then figure out what word it is but as you get better you just look at the word as a whole and know it. So spelling it out (saying the note names) is an excellent first step but later you'll want to just read through it and know what to do automatically.

      No, I don't think this is a good choice for that. You want a small recorder and mic or lav mics. Maybe something like this: zoomcorp.com/en/ca/handheld-video-recorders/field-recorders/f2andf2-bt/ or bulkier: zoomcorp.com/en/ca/podcasters/

    I've just bought a cheap clip-on CP-60G, but it acts pretty wierd - it picks up anything that happens with the instrument much louder than the music itself. Like I breathe and my clothes touch the guitar - and it picks this up REALLY loud. Or fingers touching the fret board or guitar body in any place - these sound like drums. Or when I pick strings - the sound of picking is extremely loud. But the music itself - is much softer :) So to play it you really need to sit still, don't breathe, very accurately pick the strings and don't touch anything you don't want to touch. I wonder if this one is similar?

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar 7 днів тому

      Yes, these types of mics do that on guitars. I find it's better if it's near a significant brace or on the bridge but I think I might just be used to them and how they react.

    Thank you so much. So far your method book has been great for learning and I already bought the second book. I've had problems playing a single string with my thumb without touching the other strings and muting them, I already watched the right hand technique lesson but I can't see exactly if I'm doing something wrong or if it's just a matter of practice. What are your recomendations? Thanks again!

    • @Thisisclassicalguitar
      @Thisisclassicalguitar 7 днів тому

      Maybe practicing thumb strokes with rest strokes and then free strokes will better teach your thumb the differences needed between them. Can you play a single free stroke thumb without hitting the other strings?
